The Long Tom Pass gets its name from the Long Tom cannons used during the Anglo-Boer war and the route followed by wagon drivers transporting goods from Mozambique to Lyndenburg. The road tumbled over the so called Devil's Knuckles, and many wagons were lost in this area as it was so dangerous.

Steenkampsberg Nature Reserve, just outside the Dullstroom, provides for the rare Wattled Crane - a wetland-dependant bird. Short trails through the Steenkampsberg Reserve lead across the Suikerboskop mountain. These trails are not particularly demanding and make for a delightful few hours of trail blazing. On the eastern slope of Suikerboskop an old British blockhouse and war graves from the Second Anglo-Boer War may be visited. A walk to the public dam above the Ambassador Lodge makes for a nice and easy walk along a gravel road. Take along sun protection and also warm clothing as the sub-alpine weather in Dullstroom can change rapidly.

Visit the tiny town of Tonteldoos, which is located in a peaceful valley 25km from Dullstroom and is a popular fly-fishing destination, surrounded by farmlands and large areas of open bush.
